GOOD NEWS ALL AROUND!!!
So, I think me and my friends may be doing something right.
First of all, my friend Santiago Rocha won the first place for best short film on http://www.animacam.tv with his movie EL MONSTRUO
el monstruo from santiago rocha on Vimeo.
Then, today, our internet show "El pequeño tirano" got mentioned on one of Colombia´s main newspapers.
Posted on their webpage http://www.elespectador.com/noticias/judicial/video-agro-ingreso-seguro being the most voted and commented video on their list.
and talked about it on a radio show of the first radio station of Colombia.

It turned out to be a great monday.
Let´s hope we can keep it up.

We're kinda back!!!!
So, I´m back from my month long trip to Spain where I was Invited to be jury for the International festival of animation, Animadrid.
I came back to find that my two best friends and colleagues had put in motion the development of a new episode of our online series: EL PEQUEÑO TIRANO (the little tyrant). As we´ve been developing some episodes for a long time but haven´t been able to release them for many reasons this was a great welcoming gift.
I had a very tangential participation on this episode. I drew and animated the header of the show and the title image.
This image is a parody on the cover of Dostoevsky´s book, Notes from Underground (Memorias del subsuelo).
I hope this will get us back on track and producing episodes.
Also to celebrate, I release this Wallpaper
Enjoy.

The Night I was chased by a crazy nun!
Soho Magazine asked me to illustrate an article by peruvian author, Jaime Bayly.
As the title literally tells us, this piece talks about a crazy nun that chases the author in a concert hoping that she can "make him straight" again.
She keeps refering to him as "A Little Ant" that got out of line.
THE STRINGS
As I finished reading the image of the famous poster of Hitchcock´s North by Northwest came to my mind. With the the flying nun instead of the villainous plane.
Cary Grant, run!
Sally Field, Fly.
A flying nun. What a great concept.
PS: On the lower right corner I made a little nod to Salvador Dali.
Enjoy ;)

HIV, The invisible Enemy
Today I received a printed copy of the "Bakanika" Magazine which featured two of my illustrations.
For the main illustration I was asked for a full page abstraction of "HIV".
As I´m not familiar with any cases of HIV, I decided not to approach the subject on any personal or visceral level, so not to appeal to the sensationalistic aspect of the subject, but on a social and media level and ask myself what´s the common perception of the virus by people who´s not thoroughly informed, as I was at the moment of beginning the illustration.
Printed version with text.
As I talked to many people, I found out that the first death that an H.I.V patient experiments it´s a social death. Maybe it´s religion, maybe it´s because of people myths and media misconceptions, but the feeling of rejection is sometime worse than the ailment itself. That nowadays can be treated to some great results.
For the abstraction I used the image of Kali, the hindi goddess that often conveys death and destruction. She wears a necklace of skulls and a skirt of hands. Elements I found very useful to speak of death and social isolation.
The other illustration was a much more simple one. It was a vignette on how anyone can have H.I.V and don´t even know it.

So, I tried to do this very honestly and careful, so I hope no one gets offended.

TROPICAL JUNGLE
Thanks to my father (co-author of this project) I've been able to come in contact with many environments like this one. This is one of the first pictures I've done based on memory of my 5 senses (Specially Touch and Smell).
Personally I think this one has a different feel to the other ones. It was drawn only with the lasso. A technique I call Lassography.

INSPIRATION: THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE (1966)
I just finished watching The Man called Flintstone, a movie I used to love when I was a kid, and hadn't watched since the late eigthies. The movie is what it is, a long Flintstone episode that parodies the Spy Genre. But I think what made this movie stick in my mind throughout the years was the colorful opening sequence when Fred is made a spy. One thing I didn't remember was the ending credits being so good, maybe because as a kid those Hanna Barbera movies ended when they all merrily laughed to a very lame joke or a simplistic and basic moral. Credits didn't mean a thing.
But...
Something like Lascaux meets Indie Comics.
Everyday I amaze myself of how some people can make great figures using only basic shapes. That´s shows some great understanding of design, nature and people´s minds.
Great Great source of inspiration.
